Russia has shown off some of its cyberwarfare tactics, including assaults on the Ukrainian power grid and government websites. Ukraine's Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security revealed that PrivatBank, the country's biggest commercial bank, had been subjected to a denial-of-service attack that briefly disrupted consumers' online banking transactions. Service was restored within hours of the attack being reported, according to the government.

The websites of Ukraine's Defense Ministry and military were also disrupted, according to the newswire. It did not say who was responsible for the attacks.

More broad cyberattacks may be launched in response to Western economic sanctions or other efforts to assist Ukraine, according to officials.

The fear is so acute that on Friday, the White House's deputy national security adviser for cybersecurity, Anne Neuberger, led a tabletop exercise to ensure that federal agencies are ready for Russian styled cyber-attacks in an escalating confrontation with Moscow.
